A collection of short stories whose worlds range from a futuristic dream scape where saints must be blessed with swiveling hips ('Elvis Has Expounded the Building'), to how mysterious pranks to an country church's outdoor sign are the fuse that implodes a pastor wound too tight ('A Delivered Sign'), to a place deep in the woods that makes it hard to leave, whether one wants to or not ("Wishes Haunting Dreams"), to a short bed time story written to celebrate the birth of a dear one ('The Way of The Willow'). The collection ends with an early version of "Still Life', a mystery where a child's disappearance collides with the selfishness of a no account neer-do-well. "Still Life" is currently being revised into a novel, 'Still Life (with Lares and Penates)'.

I love the stories. He very definitely describes some of the mountain folk very well. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there needs to be some 'breaks' put into it - where he switches from Floyd to the preacher, for example - it took a minute to process that the scene had changed from one group to the other. Other than that, there are very few typos. His characters are well-fleshed-out. He draws you into the stories. "Still Life" was the best, in my opinion. The descriptions are good enough that the characters' personalities stand out.I would definitely like to see more from this author. Steffan, if you ever need a 'proof-reader' your wife knows how to contact me. Keep 'em coming. You're very talented and really have a 'way with words'.

I started reading this book in a quiet medical office. When I read the first anagram in the first story I burst out laughing, loudly, and startled everyone there. That was no good. I decided to read the book at bedtime, to relax, but I wanted to stay up and read more. This book is best read when you can laugh out loud and read as long as you like. The back cover says the final story, "Still Life", already a novella at 44 pages, is being revised into a novel. I am really looking forward to reading it!
